This is a photo from my first day as a parent a little less than 4 years ago. I feel like I’ve been awake ever since. Staying awake to the beauty around me and the need that surrounds me is humbling as I pastor a church and partner with Beloved to raise our children.

Happy

Today, TLO, LB, and Beloved went to MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) where they talked about Easter and the death of Jesus. Tonight, after LB went to bed, Beloved was at church and TLO and I talked about our days. This morning my daughter and I were driving in the car and I remembered that it was an important day for my dad.  There was an issue that he was very concerned about and he had worked tirelessly to get the issue on his town’s ballot and today the votes would be tallied.  I thought I should say a prayer for him.
Thinking that it would be a wonderful teaching moment, I asked my daughter in the backseat:
“Do you want to pray with me?”
“Yeah”
“OK, repeat after me:  Dear God/may your will be done today/ help Opa/ to have hope and joy/whatever happens/Amen.”
TLO dutifully repeated each phrase after me.  As soon as she had repeated “Amen.” she shouted with glee “Again! Again!”
So we prayed some more prayers, for Granny, for our family.  Then she said, “My turn.”  I said “OK, I’ll repeat after you.”

trees, beautiful trees (and then she commenced to sing the Beautiful Trees song from Sid the Science Kid)”
It melted my heart that her first ever out loud prayer, unprompted, began with thank you.  And that when she hears Amen, she yells Again! Again!
May I carry those reminders about what prayer is all about with me today and every day.
